the important things

it’s snowing tonight.  for those of you who may not be from around here, let me explain a little bit.  saturday the high was somewhere around 80 degrees.  it is monday night and it is snowing.  that’s march in texas for you.

i’m sitting here with all the lights turned off and the blinds pulled up, watching the flakes dance around in the wind and drift to the ground (where some of it is actually sticking!).  the last time this happened was about a year ago and at 2am i was laying on my bed, in the dark, watching the snow and talking on the phone to one of my good friends.  he said something that night that stuck with me.  he told me he loved things that can’t be saved for later.

things that can’t be saved for later.

many things can be saved for later: checking your email, seeing a movie, buying groceries, writing a paper.  it’s the important things that can’t (or shouldn’t) be saved for later: building relationships, caring for people, spending time with God, pausing to enjoy His gifts (such as snow).  it’s like manna.  the important things are given to us in the exact measure and timing we need.  if we try to gather too much, if we try to save things for later that cannot be saved, we will find it has gone bad.

i love the idea of valuing things that can’t be saved for later.  watching the mavs game?  that can wait.  watching snow fall?  until i live in a place where it’s more than a once-a-year occurrence, that i will never pass up.
