the end of an era…

thursday evening i took my last final exam ever.  even though i won’t graduate until december, i am for all intents and purposes no longer a student.  which is really weird.

i have been a student for 16 years.  16 years seems like a really long time to do anything when you’re only 21.  and as much as i hate tests and homework and research papers, i really do love school.  it’s predictable – every time you walk into a classroom, you have some idea of what to expect.  even though the teacher and subject matter may be different, by the time you’re a senior in college, you know how to “do school.”

i think the biggest part of why i’ll miss it is because i’m good at it (which ties in nicely to my last post).  i mean really, who doesn’t enjoy doing something they’re good at?  even if you don’t necessarily enjoy the process, the sense of accomplishment when you do well in the end is pretty sweet.

basically, i’m scared.  what happens when you finally finish something you’ve been working on for 16 years?  if you’re anything like me, you refuse to leave and become a teacher :)  but even so, there’s no guarantee that i’ll be as good at the teaching side of things as i was at the student side.

ah, the “real world.”  it’s a big scary place.  good thing i have a God who is waaaaay bigger and more deserving of my fear.

p.s. – go see iron man.  it’s awesome.

Yes, you have been good as a student. But, more importantly, you are also good at being a “mensch” (Yiddish for “person”). A mensch is a very good thing to be and to be around. Your Zayde was a mensch.

Your maturity and spiritual insight makes me proud to be your Dad. “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Phil 1:6

Don’t worry about the future and the real world. You are well equipped to handle both!

Congratulations on finishing strong. Now – on to a new adventure!!!
