brief encounters

on the plane ride home from new york the other day i sat with a single dad and his two year old son. we talked a bit at the beginning and then settled into our own activities – me reading and him trying desperately to keep his son entertained as we sat at the terminal for an hour before taking off. after we finally got in the air, he noticed that i was reading dietrich bonhoeffer’s cost of discipleship and we started talking about Jesus.

this man had an amazing story that he willingly shared with me.  we talked about how we both love truth proclaimed boldly and hate wishy-washy, feel-good bullshit (see prosperity gospel and joel osteen).  we talked about his son and the difficulty of being responsible for another human life while trying to get your own life back on track.  i spent a lot of time pretending i was scared of the toy dinosaur his son was “attacking” me with.

the best part of it all, and one of the things i’m looking so forward to in india and nepal, was getting to spend time with a member of the bride of the Christ that i didn’t know and will probably never see again.  this man and i have pretty much nothing in common, but we love each other because Christ loved us.  i’m pretty sure that is one of the most beautiful things we can experience on this earth.

So, how do you really feel about Joel Osteen?
