Why I Am Not Going to School Today

Nope, we don’t have another snow day.  Rather, I am about to leave for the airport to board a plane headed to Washington, D.C.!

This weekend I am attending the Teach for America 20th Anniversary Summit.  While there I will participate in sessions given by Wendy Kopp, Michelle Rhee, Geoffrey Canada, Joel Klein, Mike Feinberg, and more.  On Sunday, I will get to attend a 3-hour professional development with Doug Lemov, the genius behind Uncommon Schools and Teach Like a Champion.*

Plus, I get to spend the weekend not in Memphis hanging out with a 10,000 incredibly passionate TFA corps members and alumni.  So excited!!!  Even though I plan on staying in the classroom, it will be wonderful to have the opportunity to meet so many different people from all over the country who are interested in the field I am so passionate about.

Due to the Summit, TFA seems to have been in the news quite a bit.  Some of the articles have been positive, although I have seen a number of articles and blog posts that are pretty negative about Teach for America.  Ultimately, people can say whatever they want about us, but I don’t see how this many people getting together to discuss issues and seek solutions in education can be a bad thing.
